How a Horseback Ride Works
Pick the ride length, sign the waiver, wear long trousers, and meet at the stables.
Choose the Ride Length
Options run from about 30 minutes to an hour. Riders of every level are taken; beginners get the calmest horses.
Dress for the Saddle
Long trousers and closed shoes. The operator asks you to bring a camera and a signed waiver, and food and drink are not allowed on the ride.
Meet at the Stables
Rides start from D/D MTA Horse Tours by the KOA campground, not from the visitor center. Check the meeting point on your ticket.
Ride Toward Eagle Mesa
The trail passes Eagle Mesa, Sleeping Bear and Bear and Rabbit, with the Mittens across the valley. The guide tells the stories behind the names.

The Guide
Riding in Monument Valley: Who It Suits and What You See
A short ride covers less ground than a jeep tour, and it takes riders of every level from age 8.
A Monument Valley horseback tour is a guided ride of 30 minutes to an hour on Navajo land, and the one on GetYourGuide starts from stables near the KOA campground rather than inside the tribal park’s visitor area. The Horseback Adventure Tour is run by D/D MTA Horse Tours with horses raised by a Navajo ranching family, matched to each rider’s experience. It is from $74 a person (checked October 2026) and rated 4.4 out of 5 from 1,465 reviews.

The rating is lower than the vehicle tours’ 4.8 to 4.9, from a very large number of rides. Recent reviews are warm about the guides and about safety: one rider and her mother “felt very safe and comfortable” because each person got a horse that matched their experience. Another found it funny that her husband’s horse kept stopping to eat.
What you see from the saddle
The trail runs past Eagle Mesa, Sleeping Bear, Sitting Hen and the formation called Bear and Rabbit, with the West and East Mittens on the skyline. It does not follow the 17-mile Valley Drive or reach the backcountry arches; the stops on a jeep tour are a separate trip. For families with children from 8 up, a short ride is often the easier half-day.
Guides are trained in first aid and CPR every year, according to the operator. Helmets are available on request.
Who it suits
It suits beginners as well as riders, and anyone who wants an hour away from the vehicles. It does not suit children under 8, pregnant women, or anyone who wants to see the whole valley; for that, book a vehicle tour and ride as a second activity. Wear long trousers and closed shoes, and bring the signed waiver the operator asks for.

At John Ford Point on the Valley Drive, Navajo riders often wait with a horse for the classic Western photograph; that is a separate, small fee paid on the spot, and the John Ford Point guide explains it.

What Horseback Riders Say
"Super aventure, guide très drôle et sympathique 😊"
"My mom and I went on the horseback Tour and it was beyond amazing! The guide(s) were great and made sure everyone was getting a horse that matched one’s horse riding experience! We both felt very safe and comfortable. The guide was funny, spoke clearly, gave instructions and made sure everybody was included. We chose the one hour tour (definitely recommended, 30min would’ve been too short in our opinion). The hour was perfect since once you’ve felt comfortable and confident in riding, you were able to totally enjoy the view and just take it all in. The route was STUNNING!! Great view of the mountains and a wide , open landscape. We chose the tour at 6.00pm-7.00pm, next time we’d choose an hour earlier, so the tour would end when it’s still bright outside (on the way back it was dark, which was totally fine but it was getting very cold). Overall, 1000/10 experience, worth every penny! Definitely would recommend!"
"Excellent experience but my husband have a horse funny, he is always hungry and stop to eat as always. It is esilarant.😂😂"
"We were as a family, our son rides horses and me too. It was well adapted to all of us and we had a relaxing time, enjoying being with horses and the surrounding landscape. Thank you for the nice experience !"
"It was my first time riding a horse, but the guide was able to explain to me how to mount and then how to handle the horse along the route. They assign you a horse suited to your skill level. A perfect experience. I'd do it again 1,000 times!"
"Amazing tour! We woke up really early to catch the sunrise, the views were amazing. Guide was super nice. Totally recommend!"
"It was a wonderful experience… watching Monument Valley come to life with color at sunrise!! They were very kind, and the horses were very well-behaved. They reassured me and gave me a horse that was just right for me, given my fear. 😁 A wonderful memory."
