How a Monument Valley Jeep Tour Works
Pay the park entry, meet at the visitor center, and climb into the open truck.
Pay the Entry at the Gate
The tribal park entry is $10 a person and is not part of the tour price. National park passes are not accepted. In summer the gate line can take 25 minutes.
Meet Beside The View Hotel
Tours leave from the visitor center area. They run on Navajo Nation time, one hour ahead of the rest of Arizona from March to early November.
Ride the Loop and Beyond
The truck follows the Valley Drive's famous stops, then leaves it for the backcountry arches and petroglyphs that only Navajo-guided tours may enter.
Cover Up for the Dust
The vehicles are open in warm weather and the roads are sand. A hat, sunglasses, water and a scarf for your face make the ride more comfortable.

The Guide
What a Jeep Tour Covers That Your Own Car Cannot
The loop is open to private cars. The backcountry is not, and the open truck is the way in.
A Monument Valley jeep tour is a two-and-a-half-hour drive with a Navajo guide in an open-air truck, and its point is the backcountry: the arches and rock art off the Valley Drive that private cars may not enter. The most booked one on GetYourGuide is the Backcountry Jeep Tour with Navajo Guide, rated 4.8 out of 5 from 2,479 reviews and from $68 a person (checked October 2026). It takes in the Mittens, the Three Sisters, John Ford Point and the Totem Pole, then turns off the loop for the backcountry, and the guide usually ends with a song.

“Jeep” is the word everyone searches, but most of these tours run in pickup trucks with bench seats and a canopy, or in enclosed vans when it is cold. What matters is who drives. Navajo Nation Parks lists 25 tour operators for the valley, the guides are Navajo, and reviewers name their guide more often than any sight.
What you see that the self-drive loop misses
Drive the 17-mile loop yourself and you get the numbered overlooks: the Mittens and Merrick Butte, Elephant Butte, the Three Sisters, John Ford Point, and Artist’s Point near the end. A jeep tour stops at most of those too. Then it leaves the public road for the parts of the park that only guided tours may enter: Moccasin Arch, Sun’s Eye, the Big Hogan with its natural skylight, Ear of the Wind, and petroglyph panels left by the Ancestral Puebloans who lived here long before the Navajo.
The guide also does the driving on a road that is hard on cars. The park’s own pages call the loop “very rough terrain and deep sand dunes” and bar RVs, motorcycles and large SUVs from it. If you came in a low rental car, a tour is the easier way round.
Which jeep tour to book
| Tour | From | Length | Reviews |
|---|---|---|---|
| Backcountry Jeep Tour with Navajo Guide | $68 | 2.5 hours | 2,479 |
| Monument Valley 4x4 Navajo Guided Tour | $85 | 2.5 hours | 143 |
| Highlights Tour with Backcountry Access | $83 | 3.5 hours | 595 |
| Scenic 1.5-Hour Tour | $65 | 1.5 hours | 456 |
Per person, as listed on GetYourGuide in October 2026, with the $10 park entry extra.
The 2.5-hour tours cover the same ground. The 3.5-hour highlights tour adds longer photo stops, Ear of the Wind and the Ancestral Puebloan ruins, which suits photographers. The 1.5-hour tour is the loop with a guide and little of the backcountry, so check its stops if the arches are why you are coming.
Time of day
Midday tours are the easiest to book and the hottest. Early morning gives cooler air and long shadows; the last departure of the day is the sunset tour, which runs the same backcountry route in the golden hour and costs a few dollars more. In summer, carry more water than you think you need.
For the whole day, the full-day tour adds Mystery Valley’s cliff dwellings and a hogan visit to the backcountry.

Monument Valley Jeep Tour FAQ
What to know before booking a jeep tour in Monument Valley.
Most are 2.5 hours; the range is 1.5 hours to 3.5 hours. The 2.5-hour tours cover the Valley Drive's main stops and a stretch of backcountry. The 3.5-hour highlights tour adds longer photo stops, Ear of the Wind and Ancestral Puebloan ruins. For the whole day, the full-day tour adds Mystery Valley.
Usually not: most tours use open-air pickup trucks with bench seats, or enclosed vans in cold weather. The operators call them safari-style vehicles. They are open to the wind and the dust, so bring sunglasses, a hat and a scarf to cover your face on the sandy stretches.
From $65 to $85 a person for 1.5 to 3.5 hours, on GetYourGuide in October 2026. The Backcountry Jeep Tour, the most booked, is from $68. The $10-a-person park entry is paid separately at the gate, and tips for the guide are extra.
The backcountry: Moccasin Arch, Sun's Eye, the Big Hogan, Ear of the Wind and petroglyph panels. These are off the public Valley Drive and open only to Navajo-guided tours. The tours also stop at the loop's famous views, the Mittens, the Three Sisters and John Ford Point.
Mostly not: the tours list the tribal park entry, $10 a person, as an extra paid at the gate. Some operators include taxes and operational fees in the tour price. Check the inclusions for your tour, and bring a card for the gate.
